| Ticket to Work |
| In 1999 federal legislation called “Ticket to
Work” was passed to provide people receiving certain types of
Social Security benefits the tools they need to participate
in paid work. One part of this new law recognized the need for
Social Security beneficiaries to have customized, expert advice
to lay out a path to employment. Project Independence began
participating in Benefits Planning, Assistance and Outreach
grant from Social Security in 2001. Since that time Project
Independence has assisted hundreds of beneficiaries every year
in understanding how work and work incentives can affect their
benefits. |

| Work Incentive Planning and Assistance |
| The newest Social Security grant project, Work
Incentive Planning and Assistance, focuses on empowering beneficiaries
through work incentives available through Social Security. Our
Community Work Incentive Coordinators (CWIC’s) meet individually
with each beneficiary, researching each person’s unique situation
to provide the best customized assessment of available work
incentives. A report is prepared for and discussed with the
beneficiary, and all options are reviewed. If necessary, we
can provide information for other community resources to address
areas of concern outside the scope of the WIPA project. Our
ultimate goal is for beneficiaries to gain the knowledge that
will enable them to make informed choices about going to work. |
