How Access to Adventure Works

A group of Access to Adventure participants and staff meet 3 times a year to brainstorm and vote on upcoming events. This group is called the Steering Committee, and anyone is welcome to sign up for it. The Access to Adventure Coordinator takes all of their ideas and compiles them into the Adventure Announcements, the A2A newsletter. This newsletter is sent to everyone on our mailing list and is also posted on our website. Events are open to anyone over the age of 18 with developmental disabilities, whether they are supported by Project Independence or not.

The registration form for an event is located inside of the Adventure Announcements and must be filled out completely and sent in with a check made payable to Project Independence in order to sign up for an event. Events fill up on a first come first served basis, and are added until the event becomes full, at which point a waiting list is maintained.

Every participant will receive a letter after they register for events telling them the status of their application, and will also receive a reminder postcard two weeks prior to the event which has updated transportation information included. Every participant is responsible for their own transportation to one of the four “transportation hubs” nearest to them. A2A Volunteers will pick up participants from these hubs and bring them to and from the event. The safety of participants is the highest priority before, during, and after every activity. Each event is planned and overseen by the Access to Adventure Coordinator, who makes sure that there is no more than 1 volunteer to every 6 participants. A2A Volunteers are highly capable people from the community and from Project Independence that have undergone background checks and training with the A2A Coordinator. Each volunteer is matched with a group of participants and ensures their satisfaction and safety throughout the event!

Like all of Project Independence services, the intent of Access to Adventure is to maximize the potential of each person to be as independent as possible. Some individuals require additional assistance and can contact us for more information.
